SETTLE IN

“It’s Only unfamiliar initially”

~Leah Shephard

Many of us can relate to the experience of adapting to a new environment. Our reasons vary, new marriage, a new mother, transitioning into a new career or relocating. For whatever reason getting settled into a new place or space can be a little unsettling.

Pondering this thought I considered the story of Ruth a Moabite woman who chose to cleave to the unfamiliar and leave the familiar. In my review her decisions revealed to me a pattern of her willingness to embrace change; An interracial marriage, A religion and cultural shift, widowhood, relocation, gleaning in an unknown field, remarrying and motherhood. Whew… read Ruth Chapters 1-4.

With so many opportunities to reject or quit what sustained Ruth in the transitions she faced? How did she settle in places and spaces life presented her?

Three things I believe were instrumental:

  1. Her Openness (or Willingness)

  2. Her Decisions

  3. Her Obedience

Today, ask yourself the following questions:

Am I open to change, to love, to the unfamiliar? Do I seize opportunities that can transform my life? Do I recognize when it’s time to shift, reinvent or exit? Are my thoughts and emotions aligned? Am I teachable? Do I obey the counsel I seek and receive? Am I Loyal?  Who can confirm this in my life?

Don’t rush your responses… Ponder

Life and chance happen to us all (Ecclesiastes 9:11) To experience an outcome similar to Ruth, we should remain flexible and faithful through good and bad experiences and if we’re willing to leave the familiar and thrive in the temporary space of the unfamiliar. Yes, it’s possible that the field you’re laboring in today…Can become the field you own tomorrow.

Remember, it’s only unfamiliar initially.
